i loved this piece! it was so great to watch these dark shapes moving through the sky. at one point a helicopter flew by in the distance and it looked like it was almost the same size as the group of balloons. i think this piece should be titled "ufos"

Grace Pak, Sylvia Yi, Sooyeon Lee, Eunji Bang,

just to start a dialogue, can you guys explain what the balloons carried? So we understand this from its' conception.

the first thing i thought about was the whales, i hope they dont suffer from your project.

it was interesting to see the four groups of balloons, start from four separate corners and end up following the same path in the wind.

i loved the group that got stuck on the lamppost. that was brilliant.

I heard you guys discuss this in class, and then the same night I had a dream about grey balloons landing everywhere.
After you let the balloons go, this guy came up to me and started asking me about it. He asked what the concept was and I wish I could've told him, because I wasn't really sure.
Anywho...it's great that all these people were so intrigues by it, which is good for all of you.

sam, don't worry about the whales - these balloons are 100% biodegradable (especially from California) so all is good. each balloon was tied with cotton twine (again biodegradable) and you probably can't see, but at the end of the cotton twine was a picture of those small army men (like in toy story), so each balloon carried a picture of a toy soldier. but you're not supposed to see these when they're hundreds of feet up in the air. when the balloons come down one day that's when you're supposed to actually see the soldiers. I'm going to leave it up to the girls to explain more about the concept - I don't want to give everything out in one blow!

i'm far more interested in the entire physics of it all...the fact that the balloons started conglomerating towards each other bc of one factor: wind.

i'm far more interested in the entire physics of it all...the fact that the balloons started conglomerating towards each other bc of one factor: wind. however much the group may have wanted the balloons to go all over manhattan and into the far beyond...(hah ^^) the wind is the single most important element that causes the balloons to go where it goes.

i enjoyed it when passersby took pictures of the girls surrounded by balloons. that's when i wanted this to be more of a F.I.T. or Parsons' Fashion Meets Performance Art Piece. I would love to see balloon outfits run down the aisle? capeche?

letting go of balloons in and of itself is not as exciting of an idea to me..perhaps bc i've seen it done as an art performance piece many times before. i'm still not sure what's going on with the photos.. if they're recent photos, or old photos, etc. what's interesting to me are the tiny details that're beyond the girls' control:
the wind
the buildings
the passersby...

i'd like to see you guys push this balloon project in a way that is totally fresh and unseen. ^^

This was perhaps one of my favorite pieces of the class. The balloons reminded me of a flock of birds migrating and following the front of the pack. The black against the sky was also a great touch. I feel if they were a different color it would be totally different feel. I particularly enjoyed the "mistake" where the balloon got stuck on the light, this was not only funny but added to the idea of one getting left behind. You girls may or not have been thinking this but it has a very rich concept. Good work

I really enjoyed watching you guys before you let the balloons go - the people taking pictures of you, old ladies coming up to talk to you. That was great.

Initially, when you released the balloons, I was a little disappointed that they were all tied together... but the way they all started moving once they were high in the air made me forget that. As quite a few people have also mentioned... the last group that got stuck on the lamp was hilarious (while also slightly tragic - in a good way). And I think one of my favorite parts of this was that so many people who happened to be around when you guys let the balloons go took a moment or two to look up at the sky.

This piece was really fun to watch. I was surprised how quickly the balloons were swept away by the wind. I felt like i turned my head for 1 second and they are already gone. I loved their presence though, they felt like UFOs. I think my favorite part of the entire piece was the bunch that got stuck on the light pole though, that was just too perfect.

I think documentation alone this is probably one of the most successful works shown. The pictures really illustrate the action from set-up to the final action very clearly.

This piece was very interesting..although the idea itself of releasing balloons was not new to be because it had been talked about before in class by my partner and I, the way this group carried out the project was refreshing in a way. The subtle details made this project one of my favorites such as all the balloons being black and being tied to clusters of paper. In addition, I really enjoyed how each member of the group seemed to be one with the balloons at one point and how they stood at different corners of the streets

I loved working on this project!! It was fun! Everyone took pictures of us and one of the street walkers said if I am part of Walgreens and they thought i was doing some kind of fund raising campaign. LOL
Anyways, this project is somewhat political. We had more than 420 balloons and each balloon represents 10 soldiers. As of now, approximately 4200 soldiers died (US troops). Also, color black represents death..
and why we choose black balloons? Eun ji and Sylvia will explain... more to come!!!
I am glad everyone enjoyed this project!!
Have a great summer !

Thanks for your love, guys. It was painful to make those balloons.

Anyway, like Grace said, the balloons are 100% biodegradable. But apparently that's not good enough, as one girl called us heartless bastards for killing birds. (Art kids are stupid.) But then again, it's good that we offended at least one person; after all, if your project doesn't cause some sort of controversy, it wouldn't be all that successful now would it?

And yes, of course this isn't an 'original' concept. I dare you all to come up with one yourself; it's kind of hard. Duh. But anyway, the concept is vague. You can take it anyway that you want to. I'm pretty sure the other girls and I have different ideas as to what this is about; for me it started out as just wanting to have some scary black dots in the sky.

I agree with the comment about how the balloons flying together was initially disappointing; our original idea was that they would just swarm into the sky individually. But it came out pretty fantastic as giant bunches of caviar in the sky, yeah? You could see it in the sky longer.

Haha, the one man down (aka. stuck on the lamppost) was an unfortunate accident. I'm glad everyone enjoyed its pain.

this project was one of the most exciting works that i've workd on.it was great how people on the street were very curious about this.so many people were taking pictures of me asking so many questions.i felt like i've never been paid this much attention on my works.
i have to say that we paid attention to each little details a lot such as the color and number of the ballons as well as materials that we used. Eevrything that we made was very intentional in order to express our ideas that other girls expained. though the ballons that got stuck on the lamppost wasn't something we expected, i guess the outcome was great.!

This was again, a simple and beautiful piece. While the concept of having each balloon represent a group of soldiers is poignant, I don't feel that information would be necessary for me to enjoy the piece. Great job girls, especially on being environmentally responsible!

the photos came out great. i like that we viewed it happening from the center of astor so we had four points to discover and try to keep our eyes on. Once they were let go and were carried together in the same direction, higher and higher with the wind, they formed an awesome dynamic. i like that the toy army men were not explained to us because i don't think they are needed in the viewing of the piece live or seeing the photos as the piece itself. Even so, the toy men do add a fun element to the whole performance of it all.

It is very interesting to see the dynamic of the piece in both stages (on the ground and in the sky). I like the sense of losing control of them when they were released. They are visually comparable to Cai Guo-Qiang's gunpowder works, but thankfully, better for the environment!

Formally, the balloons really reminded me Black Rainbow by Cai GouCiang. I think the concept of the soldiers and the death are very interesting but without letting us see the tabs under the balloons a lot of it was lost. The presentation of it also seemed a little misleading... the balloons floating up into the sky seemed hopeful and uplifting (no pun intended)

what ali said! it was really simple and beautiful, i don't even really think its necessary to know the back story.

This piece re minds me of the work of Cai Guo Xiang and his explosives pieces. this piece has an element of pop art to it, with the shiny balloons. the effect of releasing these balloons into the air is poetic and nostaligic-it reminds me of childhood and the past.
