was it your intention to move the balloons from the static environment of the classroom to the windy outdoors? if so, i love that aspect of it. seeing the balloons almost ripped from their surface by the wind was pretty good. but the best part -by far- was watching you stand amidst your ballons as they got tangled all around you.
I felt that balloon's movement was so humorous and cartoon-like. Within a minute of its presentation, it gave so many faces, mood, frightened, happy, ecstatic, sad.......all those feelings expressed in a simple gesture of balloons.
I am now wondering what Ali was thinking. Can you explain little bit since we have very little information as there is no title.
i was a bit confused because i found myself waiting a lot for something to happen but nothing happened until the end except for them just moving with the wind. but as quinn said, if moving the balloons from the room to the outside was part of the performance, i really enjoyed it too - watching everyone follow you was an interesting picture
i really liked the bright colors of the ballons. those colors went along with the exciting ballons' movement by the wind. It almost seemed like each color of the ballons represented its feelings through movement. Yet, i hope i just saw this piece outdoors with a better presentation.(not like taped on drawing boards)
what can i say, i am a sucker for balloons and bubbles. I think that wind played a major role in your project and i liked how it activated the entire movement of the balloons, a nice touch.
I enjoyed watching the balloons thrash around violently…Every time they fell further into the knot I missed their original form more and more until I lost all hope of them returning to their original sequence.
I too felt like the balloons taped to the drawing boards wasn't the most effective presentation, however I understand that the weather that day wasn't too forgiving and once the tangled balloons were brought to the ground I think the messiness of the tape job may have added to the failed effort of the piece. -Brenden
While we were inside, I didn't know what Ali was going to do with the balloons. They really reminded me of this silly online game "Poppit" which is really addicting and pointless (http://www.pogo.com/games/poppit?pageSection=free_home_my_fav). Outside the balloons has a lot of life. I love how they got all tangled together by the wind, and especially loved when Ali got all caught in them at the beginning.
I'm sad it wasn't set up in the room for target practice.
But I agree with all the other comments, watching you get tangled in it was funny. The wind helped -- the balloons were pretty much horizontal, which was strange to see. The duct tape on board is forgivable, I know how difficult balloons can be...always trying to escape. Those bastards.
the piece post-drawing room is FAR more interesting. the diamond-shaped installation was a lot more one-dimensional and aesthetic when in the room, but once it left to the great outdoors, there was a childlike freedom that emitted....i intensely enjoyed everyone's laughter, especially hiroshi's excitement to see your considered balloon installment go into total disarray.
when physics becomes a part of a piece, somehow something otherworldly and magical comes into play. the elements take over the direction and intention of the piece far beyond the grip of the artist herself...especially as ali is forced to acknowledge the reality that there is no point in untangling anymore. sad but funny. much more funny. actually, not reallly sad. haha. ^^ hehe
i'm amused that everyone wanted to pop the balloons.
I like the fact that she used the different colored ballons. It was lovely to watch how ballons move along with the wind. But I wish there are more ballons. Also, Ali project reminded me of her first project. Both of her project take me into childhood memory. Her first project was somewhat chandelier-look and it kept turning as the wind came trough. Her last project is somewhat similar ballons (both of them are very colorful), and they are affected by wind.
I really enjoyed how this piece turned out however, Im not sure what the intention of the artist was initially. The wind played an important role in how the piece was viewed because without it I don't think it would have been as exciting. There was an interesting contrast with the playful nature of the medium and aggressive movement.
The second presentation was definetely really messy, and I'm just not a sucker for balloons. At first, in the room it reminded me of "B'loons", and awesome balloon game, and then it was moved outside and all I saw was leftover balloons in the wind...taped to boards.
i liked the balloon color choices and also the fact that kerry helped you set it up outside with her gold hands. the gold hands and colorful balloons reminded me of a carnival (this i guess is partially a comment on kerry's work since everything she touched became a part of her piece)...anyways, im glad you brought it outside and did not mind the tangling of the balloons. it was perfect that the wind was so dramatic during that point in the day. the balloons were able to take on lives of their own which was fun to watch. yet, like some have said, i do wish that you used a different surface to attach the balloons too because the boards and sort of haphazard taping were a little bit distracting
I think using the wind as part of your medium is a very romantic idea. It leaves the control of the artwork in the hands of nature, and it is a beautiful sight. I think I would have more to say about this one had I been there, so I am so sorry to have missed it.
This balloon piece reminds me of my childhood, like the bubble-blowing piece and the black baloons piece. The colorful balloons provoked feelings of happiness, unlike the black baloons which contained darker feelings. although i was not there for the performance, the idea of balloons blowing in the wind is beautiful and calming.

the piece had no impact inside. i thought she was going to shoot them or something
once outside, the wind played highly in her favor and it seemed like an unintentional blessing
although duct taping them to drawing boards was pretty ridiculous. not sure how the piece was original intended to be created.
